Evolution of Man

To create this image, I used six separate photos that I took just for this project. I started with the first image being completely black and white and progressively added color by 15% to the images from left to right to put the focus on the final image in the sequence. In order to create some depth, I copied each layer containing a person, used "color overlay" with the color black at 100%, reduced the opacity of the entire layer to 10%, then flipped and skewed the layer to create a shadow. I then applied a gradient to the title to mimic the gay pride flag but kept it narrow so that the color did not rob attention from the rest of the image. I think that the progression in posture combined with the shadows gives to image a sense of movement. I hope you like this. It was a special project for me.

  1. This is very interesting. Its too small to comment on technically as I can't see the silhouetting but I love the idea. Do you have a larger size image you can post?

  2. I thought that this was a very creative idea, and nicely portrayed. Your use of negative space really gives some extra interest, and I love the fact that you not only have the evolution of man but also the evolution of technology shown within the fact that you begin with black and white and evolve into full color. I also think that since you have a good amount of interesting negative space it was a great idea to have a bold and color touched text on the bottom. It creates a nice balance within the negative space surrounding the pictures and the negative space surrounding the text. The only thing I feel could be changed to further enhance this work would be to see the entire shadowing of the figures. It works very well without it, so it might have been something you tried and decided not to do, but I think it could have an interesting effect. Nice Work !

  3. I see the larger image and I like it a lot. If it were the evolution of my son the last image would be a teenager at a computer. ;)
    A for the module

  4. Jon, I'm glad you like it! This is my favorite piece I have created, ever. I am going to redo it at a higher resolution so that I can get a poster printed of it.

  5. The design of your photomontage is strong and effective, while at the same time simple. I like your choices of black & white, color, layout, shadow, and text. They all flow together very well creating a well-balanced and interesting design. When I look at your photomontage, I can see the inspiration behind your design. I think that it is a very important quality of a designer and of a design to have the ability to say what they want in the simplest way possible.
